MEQ project enters next phase

Identifying an animal’s optimal processing window was just the beginning of our work with Ag-Tech start up MEQ Solutions and its MEQ Live technology.

Now, together with Meat & Livestock Australia, Australian Wagyu Association and Neogen Corporation, we’re integrating genetic information to understand whether the best performers on paper deliver the best results.

This is the first time tools assessing genetic solutions, live measurement and carcase data have been combined at scale across a single commercial supply chain.

The next phase officially kicked off last month with some 450 Wagyu cattle inducted into the program at Harmony’s Dimboola Feedlot.

Each animal underwent Neogen Wagyu Feeder Check genotype testing and MEQ Live Enhanced Ultrasound scanning to establish genetic potential, baseline physical traits and marbling propensity. They’ll now be tracked across their lifecycle to measure real-time development of key carcase traits.

It’s a game changer for our industry – delivering measurable impact from genetics to grading. It will strengthen breeding programs and improve decision making across the supply chain, which means an even better-quality product.
